The Philadelphia-born musician's first foray into what some call dungeon music came about as a means for Evans to exorcize the demons that have shared his soul since the facing that tragic period of deaths that claimed so much from him. ''As hard as I tried, I couldn't tell AJ Evans to stop making music. I dream songs and have to wake up to catch them. So I had decided that in order to fully get it out of my system and not write the words that would cause someone else to do what my brothers had done, I had to do the one thing I truly abhorred, I had to write instrumental pieces to express everything, hence the creation of DARKLAND.

I shut out all sources of light, got completely stoked and placed my fingers on the keys and remembered the deaths, the funerals and the whole nine yards. DARKLAND is the soundtrack to those memories. I didn't let anyone hear any of it until it's completion. at which point Bill looked at me in astonishment and said 'That is the best thing you have ever written. I don't think I or anyone else thought you were capable of this.' But there being no demand for this type of product in 1995, it got shelved and subsequently forgotten. until...

2003 while helping a friend during a reconstruction project in his apartment in Dupont Circle, I put the disk in for background music due to us having exhausted the limited selection we had on hand due to the work being done. Long story short, it was his urgings and lots of support and help from various people in my life at that time that DARKLAND was given a new life."

The effort is quite a deviation from the musical genres Evans typically turns out. Falling under musical influences as diverse as John Lennon and Alice Cooper, Evans' previous efforts have focused on producing classic rock-sounding tunes or electronic dance tracks that move listeners across the floor. He plans to return to those roots for future releases.
